High Cholesterol

When there is too much cholesterol in the blood, it will start to accumulate on the inside walls of the blood vessels. This results in narrowing of the arteries, which limits the flow of blood. In turn, it can lead to the formation of blood clots, which are deleterious to one's health because they can cause stroke or heart attack.

The risk factors of high cholesterol include having an unhealthy diet, obesity, inactivity and family history. Food high in saturated fat and trans fat can raise cholesterol levels.

Diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat foods can help lower the risk of high cholesterol. Maintaining a healthy weight through exercise can also improve one's health state. Also, it is important to eliminate smoking and limit alcohol consumption. For some people, taking statin medicine is required as it lowers the risk of heart attack or stroke due to high cholesterol.
