A new study reaffirmed that type 2 diabetes can be avoided through healthy diet and regular exercise. Researchers from the Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) these two methods are cost-effective ways of staving off the disease and restore normal blood sugar levels. Diet and exercise can also reduce the risk of a number of cardiovascular diseases and high levels of cholesterol and blood pressure.

The review also included a series of recommendations by the CPSTF on combining healthy eating and physical activity for people identified as having high risk for type 2 diabetes. These recommendations include the following:

The researchers also discovered that, in all the diet and exercise programs they have evaluated, nearly all those who participated saw a reduced risk for type 2 diabetes as a result. There was also a considerable decrease in blood glucose and body weight. Blood pressure and cholesterol levels were also significantly improved.

In addition, the researchers discovered that more intensive programs led to greater improvements in terms of diabetes risk and weight loss. By more intensive, these programs were delivered with greater personal attention and at more sessions.
